There is something wonderful about the pre-spring days. Those times between the first of March, when you actually encounter hyacinth leaves nosing their way up past the soil line, and daffodil evidence. At this subtle time of year, if you were unschooled, you would just see the grey-brown shades of winter against the tired snow. You might notice that light is more abundant now, the birdsong has changed to jauntier tunes, and the daylight lingers. It could be that spring is coming, and nothing can stop it. Nothing.
The ice will melt, the lawn will break into little true blue and white flowers, you will find insects buzzing about, and robins will congregate on the grass.
I always felt that the year begins in April, but March is when you know that winter can only stay for a little while longer and then he is banished and must wait his turn again.
