Dodecahedron

Post by Maya »

Possets' description: "Dodecahedron-and amazing shape which has 12 separate faces, each one a pentagon! The perfume which bears its name is as unusual and attractive as the dodecahedron itself. A very dry and unusual green vanilla, a touch of nectar, and a bit of smoke from a fragrant wood fire blend perfectly with the lovely citrus paradisii oil for a happily sharper side to all the emollient sweetness. A very likable perfume and serious in an unexpected way. I would say that this is a perfect perfume to dab on when you are in a devil-may-care mood this spring."

I can smell the dry vanilla and something like a burning smell (maybe the smoke) mixed with the fragrance of citrus paradisii. The mixture can seem strange but is very nice.
It's fresh but soft.

On me this starts out with a strong, sweet note mised with the smoke....the combination brings to mind caramel, although it's more like a warm, smokey honey. I think this must be the nectar at play with the smoke. After just a couple of seconds I get the citrus paradisii oil, and while that note is very lovely, it is sort of an odd juxtaposition of scents. After about 10-15 minutes everything becomes more cohesive, although the citrus is nearly gone. The initial hit of smokey nectar backs down substantially at skin level, although I can still detect it quite well in the throw, and the green vanilla comes forward to form the base of the scent. I quite like the green vanilla note, but it seems to be very faint on my skin. It is very different from other vanillas I've smelled, lighter and slightly more herbaceous, rather than dark and sweet. It does still have sweetness, just not as much as the typical vanilla. I have a feeling this scent is going to warrant further testing after a week or two, more time to let things settle and meld.

In the bottle: brown sugar, a touch of grapefruit pith (not quite as sharp as grapefruit zest), and something that comes across as a soft and sweet vanilla.

On my skin: The brown sugar rises then drops down quite a bit, and the grapefruit comes forward. The perfume immediately shifts from food notes to perfume notes while retaining the food notes (although the brown sugar does tend to lean more toward being food and less toward being perfume)—it's a pretty neat trick and my brain is boggled at how quickly it did so.

As it dries: The brown sugar note is a soft and sweet base. Something that almost comes across as green wood threads through (perhaps that's the vanilla?). The grapefruit is definitely grapefruit, but it's also grapefruit as perfume in the prettiest way. I'm getting something that reminds me a bit of the light sweetness of nectarines or peaches without getting any of those fruit notes, and it's very smooth. I'm also getting a soft pretty smoke vibe that I got from Fearful Symmetry—very soft, pale pale smoke, that comes across as more of the memory of smoke and not actual smoke. As a side note: I am so in love with that note, I want more, more, more!

As it continues to dry: Wow, this is becoming prettier by the minute. There's something waaaay down at the bottom starting to rise up that reminds me of Eternity by Calvin Klein. It's not overt, and it's giving this a slightly green melon vibe, without smelling like green melon. It's fresh, sweet (but not sugary), and perfumy.

This is a light perfume—nothing heavy or dark in it—but that's not to say this has no presence. When I wave my hands in front of my face, I get a drift of brown sugar, a citrus flowered note, that faint touch of fresh green wood, and the hint of pale smoke. This feels like a perfect perfume to wear in the heat and humidity of summer: it's fresh feeling, delicate, a little sweet, a little tart, a bit soft green, and it does this all without coming across as a creamsicle or a nose-clogging fruity floral.

This is my third perfume from this release that I've been struggling to wrap my brain around. I consider that a good thing: the notes are beautifully blended, it has a delicate touch, it's engaging my brain, and it's just so pretty.

When I close my eyes and sniff, this makes me think of the rose garden in Duluth, MN (off of Lake Superior), and times I spent wandering around up there, which means this is a happy and golden kind of perfume without coming across as too warm or too heavy (and I definitely don't get a bright yellow vibe from this one—this is more pastel with maybe a streak of grass green). This is a perfume that reminds me that I'm surrounded by beauty, by history, and something a bit dangerous, but all that matters is this moment of sunshine.

This doesn't have a lot of throw, but I did dab sparingly because I didn't want to be overwhelmed by that brown sugar note. Having said that, I don't think this one will be high throw, but it will make people who smell it want to get closer to you so they can get more of it.

This is decidedly sweet, but with a certain lightness and dryness that made it more wearable than a syrupy sweet scent would be. The smoke doesn't make this smell like a campfire - it just adds more of a toasted quality to the melange. The dry vanilla + light toasty smoke together remind me a little of some ambers. The grapefruit is noticeable, but has a lightness to it that harmonizes with the overall profile, rather than being a super juicy grapefruit like some of the scents in this line. Very pretty, and has a bit of candy quality with the citrus and toasted sugar, but isn't tooth-achingly sweet.

I am interested in this because I love smoke, and I want a smokey perfume. Though this one sounds more fruit and sweet (brown sugar) I am intrigued. How fruity floral is it? Or is it more clean and fresh?

This one didn't have much smoke on me--it was just a light touch. When the 18-year-old tried it recently, the waft I got from her was more brown sugar (almost maple syrup) with a touch of something soft rounding it out. I wouldn't call it clean and fresh, and I also wouldn't call it a fruity floral. It's more nectar/vanilla with other things trailing in (at least on me and on the people who tried it in my impromptu perfume party).

And I may just have to get this one in an order anyway. Your description of brown sugar sounds intriguing, Maya, you are amazing in your descriptions!

Thank you. I try. I'm always afraid of steering people wrong, but I do write them as I try them so it's how it goes on me (which we all know can change from person to person, but still it's worth the mention). :flow:

Now that Maya was kind enough to send me a sample to try, I am still debating getting Dodecahedron. It is smokey but more like a slightly smokey caramel. Or if anyone would like to trade Dodecahedron for say Cybele or Victoria & Albert (who both smell fantastic in the bottle, but on me...oh my, no). I would love to have a bottle of Dodeca, this is one foodie, if it makes it, that I could get behind.
